Carmen
Shchedrin, Rodion - after Bizet, Georges

Carmen is a timeless tragedy, never more relevant than today. It is a tale of desire, seduction, jealousy and betrayal. And in this, ted Brandsen's minimalist production, the devastating finale is heightened by the complete lack of artifice. Rodion Shchedrin's fluid and muscular musical adaption fits this raw and original performance by the West Australian Ballet like Carmen's red dress - tight, revealing and, like the production, impossible to ignore.

Checkmate - The Rake's Progress
Masterpiece of British Ballet

CHECKMATE
A ballet in One Act with Prologue
Music: Bliss, Sir Arthur
Coreography: Dame Ninette de Valois

Checkmate, one of the pillars of contemporary British Ballet, was created in 1937 by choreographer Ninette de Valois in response to an idea by composer Sir Arthur Bliss. It remained in the repertoire for more than four decades and is still regularly revived
The ballet portrays a game of love and death, played according to rules of chess. It is won by the Black Queen who first capture the Red Queen, then defeats the Red Knight, and Finally delivers the Red King to her warriors

THE RAKE'S PROGRESS
A Ballet in Six Scenes
Music and Scenario: Gavin Gordon
Choreography: Dame Ninette de Valois

The Rake's Progress, which premiered in 1935, is one of the first classics of the native English school of ballet. The work's creator, Ninette de Valois, called the ballet her "Homage to Hogarth", a reference to the brilliant caricaturist whose paintings inspired her choreography.
The music is by Gavin Gordon who also wrote the scenario based on Hogarth's drawings. They portray the swift fall of a young man who squanders his newly inherited fortune in brothels and gambling dens and is ultimately cast into Bedlan, London's notorious madhouse, where, wasted by desease and consumed by remorse, he ends his days.

The Kirov Ballet offers its unmatched interpretation of the finest of Parisian Romantic ballets, where undying love triumphs over berrayal and death.
This production offers a choreographic text and dramatic understanding dating from the ballet's first Russian performance in 1842. It also offers the rare chance to see Soviet dancers performing live in the USSR.

Nutcracker Sweeties - The Judas Tree
Birmingham Royal Ballet - The Royal Ballet

Birmingham Royal Ballet
Nutcracker Sweeties

Nutcracker Sweeties is Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington's big band attack on Tchaikovsky. It portrays Broadway and America in the 1940s; full of humour, irony, commentary, swing and blues. The cast, dressed in an array of glamorous Jasper Conran costumes, includes pom-pom girls, drum majorettes, sailors, Gls and Candy Kane, David Bintley's choreography is a catwalk of jazz styles. With its glamour-pass clothes and flashing neon set, Nutcracker Sweeties is imaginative, funny and visually irresistible.

Conducted by Paul Murphy
Set Design Peter J. Davison
Costume Design Jasper Conran
Directed by Peter Mumford
Choreography by David Bintley

The Royal Ballet
The Judas Tree

Kenneth MacMillan choreographed his last ballet, The Judas Tree, especially for Irek Mukhanedov who takes the lead in this striking production. On a building site in dockland wastes, thirteen workmen, led by their Foreman, react to the vampish behaviour of a woman who has arrived in their midst.
In the heated confusion of the group, one man stands alone in the tenderness of his response. Gradually the dark underside of male sexuality and the power of peer pressure is exposed as the ballet sucks us into a web of betrayal, loss and terror.

Swan Lake
Tchaikovsky

The Bolshoi Theatre Production of
SWAN LAKE - Ballet in Four Acts
starring
Maya Plisetskaya & Nicolai Fadeyechev

Swan Lake tells the timeless tale of redemption through love. It is probably the best known of all the classical ballets, and, for the prima ballerina who dances the dual role of Odette and Odile, the supreme test of the dancer's craft.

Maya Plisetskaya's melting lyricism and superlative technique make her one of the greatest exponents of the dual role since the ballet's first introduction over a century ago.
Tchaikovsky's score, the first in his triumvirate of great ballets, is the perfect complement to the imaginative choreography that sets Swan Lake apart from anything that had proceded or followed it. This production, filmed live at the Bolshoi Theatre, captures a great ballerina in her prime in an eternal classic.
