The Complesso Monumentale di S. Maria la Nova is an authentic treasure chest of history, art and religiosity. Founded on May 10, 1279 on the hill overlooking the ancient Angevin port of Naples, this ancient Franciscan convent stands in the heart of the city's historic center. Over the centuries it has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the different sensibilities and artistic styles that have followed one another. Its walls enclose traces of artistic stratifications, testifying to a rich and varied past.
Every corner of the Complex tells a story: from Renaissance sculptures to Baroque frescoes, from masterfully decorated chapels to works of art that adorn every space. The ability to bring together different styles and sensibilities makes S. Maria la Nova a place of particular interest and rare beauty. This fusion of historical and artistic elements offers a unique environment, where spirituality and culture meet.
Today, S. Maria la Nova is not only a monumental site of great historical and artistic value, but also a prestigious location that hosts numerous events including concerts of “Opera e Lirica” in the wonderful Chiesa Monumentale.
CHIESA MONUMENTALE
The façade of the church of Santa Maria la Nova, an example of the 16th-century Neapolitan Renaissance, stands out for the use of piperno and for the portal decorated with a statue of the Virgin from the early 17th century. Inside, the sumptuous 17th-century coffered wooden ceiling features scenes from the life of the Virgin and sacred figures, created by important artists such as Corenzio, Rodriguez, Azzolino and Santafede.
Frescoes by Corenzio and Malinconico decorate the nave and transept, illustrating articles of the Creed, virtues, the “Adoration of the Shepherds” and the “Adoration of the Magi”. The high altar, designed by Cosimo Fanzago in 1633, is a triumph of art and devotion that houses sculptures by Borghetti, a Madonna on copper and putti by Mytens and the tomb of the d’Afflitto family.
The wooden choir, frescoed by Corenzio between 1603 and 1621, completes the mystical and artistic atmosphere of the complex, making the church a masterpiece of spirituality and baroque beauty.
The Chiesa Monumentale hosts the Christmas Concert of Opera e Lirica scheduled for 19th December 2025 at 7.30 pm, don't miss this incredible event. Book now!
