ENGLISH (Scorri in basso per l’italiano)

Norma, what led you to choose the cello?

As the majority of children do, I started to study ballet dancing. I used to follow my father to his concerts and shows, as he was a cellist at the San Carlo Theatre in Naples, and I was totally enchanted by the sound of the orchestra, the world of theatre and, above all, this wonderful instrument. So I took the decision that changed my life. I left ballet dancing and I dedicated mysself thoroughly to the study of the cello.

Your life as a professional musician has undoubtedly given you great satisfaction. Have you had to sacrifice a lot from the personal point of view?

The study of music is often seen as a hobby. Instead it requires a lot of commitment, patience and sacrifice. The hard work and the difficulties awaiting young people who start studying a musical instrument are numerous. Studying ten hours a day becomes a lifestyle. Only a great passion can give you the strenght and energy to carry on.

Among great cellists, who inspires you

I had the luck to study with great masters, they will always be my point of reference, but Rostropovich is my idol.

Music Conservatories are undergoing a major change, both in training and study programmes. What is your opinion about it?

I may seem a pessimist, but unfortunately I am just a realist. The new reform of the Music Conservatories decreed the end of music and of the training of good musicians. The idea on which the reform is based may be interesting, but it is not fulfilled in practice. The youth start their musical training at the Lower Secondary School, where they get a very general approach to the instrument After three years, they only have a very basic preparation when they arrive at the Music High School. After five years of Music High School, they go to university, which means the Conservatory. There, they have to face a course of study that is extremely complicated for their competences, so the most determined will go on with much difficulty, while the others will drop off. That is the failure of the reform. I feel lucky to have graduated before this major terrible change.

You collaborated with a lot of internationally renowned artists. In the future, who would you like to share the stage with?

Playing under the conduction of great Masters like Riccardo Muti, Daniel Oren, and Salvatore Accardo filled me with indescribable emotion. No doubt I would do it again.

What are the emotions that you feel when you play in unconventional settings like the Correale Museum of Terranova or the Royal Palace of Ischia

I need to thank Opera e Lirica for the wonderful opportunity they gave me to collaborate with fantastic professionals over the years. Performing in two breathtaking, evocative and elegant locations like the Correale Museum in Sorrento and the Royal Palace in Ischia gives me unforgettable emotions every night, always with a large audience.

What suggestion would you give to young musicians who would like to start their career

I would suggest young musicians to be patient and never give up in difficult moments, since there will surely be a lot. And to study as much as they can, choosing good teachers. It is the only way to get results that make a difference.

ITALIAN

Come vedi queste trasformazioni?
