Many of our guests at the Opera in Rome wonder 'how come' our concerts are held in the sacred place of Saint Paul's within the Walls Church. They are astounded by the beauty of the hall of the first Anglican church built within the walls of Rome. The American Episcopal Church of Saint Paul's within the Walls is the most interesting work of the sacred art in XIX century Rome, apart from being the only work of the "Arts and Crafts" English movement in Italy. We understand the astonishment of our guests when they discover that this Anglican temple in Rome hosts performances of secular art, which can even be as profane as La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi.
Standing on thick Romanesque-Gothic style walls alternating travertine marble and red bricks, and surmounted by a steeple with mullioned windows, Saint Paul's within the Walls Church shows undeniable sacredness and magnificence. These feelings are confirmed when visitors enter the nave and see the bright mosaics by George Breck. Yet, it is true. Saint Paul's within the Walls hosts art, and not only sacred art.
The Anglican Church does not adopt the Canon Law n. 1205 of the Roman Catholic Church, where the definition of sacred space is established. In contrast with this belief, the Anglican Church does not recognize the existence of a specific sacred space. It is indeed at a mid-way point between the Catholic and Protestant Church. As is well known, the Protestant Church does not recognize the Pope or the Pastor as the single person who can provide mediation with God. In fact, the individual ability of men and women to reach God through their own conscience is acknowledged, wherever they are praying. What is less known is that, as a consequence, the Anglican Church states that there are no places more sacred than others, because the Supreme is everywhere. Therefore, on the one hand, a prayer has the same dignity whether it is expressed on the marble floor of a church or on bare ground. On the other hand, the Anglican places of worship, as Saint Paul's within the Walls in Rome, can open their doors to non-sacred art, thus promoting culture as in Humanism, from which the protestant movement originally derived.
