The 2020 International Opera Singing Competition in Sorrento will have a special prize awarded by Ivan Antonio, the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Claudio Abbado Symphony Orchestra of Salerno. The winner will indeed be invited to take part in one of the concerts of the OSSCA 2020 Season. Let’s have a closer look to this music ensemble, through Ivan Antonio’s words.

You started your career as a conductor when you were still very young, by conducting Madame Butterfly by Puccini in Rome at the age of 24. What would the memories of this experience inspire you to say to young artists who want to start their career in music?

It was an extremely important experience for my growth as an artist and professional. It gave me the opportunity to deal with a very complex opera (as all operas by Puccini are), with which I feel a close link. My recommendation to the young is to be always scrupulously prepared, by studying the scores and looking for comparisons with ‘historic’ recordings of the arias. The composers’ secrets and desires are almost always hidden in the graphic signs and – as for the opera – in the characters’ psychology.

You have been Artistic Director and Conductor of the Claudio Abbado Symphony Orchestra of Salerno since 2016. What is the vision that you have imprinted on this ensemble over the years?

I owe a lot to the Claudio Abbado Symphony Orchestra. I remember the call by the Chair Giovanni Di Lisa as if it were yesterday. Thanks to his passion, the orchestra today has acquired an important role. Since the first day, we have tried to strike a balance between tradition and innovation, we alternate symphony concerts, opera, sacred music, and pop music by distinguished authors in our concert seasons. In addition to that, we have decided to invest in young talents and recognise their value right from the start. It is no coincidence that some of our artists have been awarded prizes by the most important concert institutions in Europe.

How has the role of the conductor evolved over the years?

In my opinion, the role of the orchestra conductor has experienced a major evolution, especially over the last few years. Many of my colleagues and former classmates have a prestigious role, performing with orchestras around the world. This is an important historical period for the sector. Moreover, the gesture technique is being studied in depth, even though such study is often not in line with the aesthetic character of the music piece. The conductor’s profession is a very complex subject.

You have recently conducted the Symphony No. 5 by Schubert with the Venice Chamber Orchestra

I had the immense pleasure of discovering this great ensemble. It is a young and very talented orchestra, and I really enjoyed playing music with them. I hope to repeat the experience soon. Right from the start of the music beat I had the feeling of a magic synergy, which led us to an immensely exciting concert.

What are your ongoing projects?

I am working at the 2020 OSSCA season, starting in April with the inaugural concert. I cannot reveal any details, I am quite superstitious!

A recurring composer in your life

Giacomo Puccini, absolutely. I sing his arias while driving or having a shower. I whistle them. I dedicate them to my wife when I come back home. I am constantly searching for new material to better understand his spirit. He was a great artist and left an immense artistic legacy.

All'Orchestra Sinfonica di Salerno Claudio Abbado devo tanto.

I prossimi progetti?
