The wonderful church of Saint Paul within the Walls, combining Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic architectural styles, embellishes the walk along via Nazionale in Rome. The church arouses visitors’ curiosity about the white stones and red bricks creating a colourful and unusual effect on its walls, and about the cultural activities taking place within them. We will reveal three interesting facts about this gem of the late XIX century – The church of St. Paul within the Walls in Rome.

Famous figures of the past

St. Paul’s within the Walls Church is well known for being decorated with images of the life of Saint Paul. Not everybody knows, however, that the apse mosaic representing the Church Fathers actually contains pictures of famous figures of the time. If we observe it carefully, we will notice that Saint Andrews resembles Abraham Lincoln, Saint James has the appearance of Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Saint Patrick has the face of Ulysses S. Grant, the general who led the American Civil War.

Multi-ethnic character

Since its origins, the Church of St. Paul within the Walls has stood out as being multicultural. The English architect who designed the building, George Edmund Street, made every effort to combine the Neo-Gothic Anglican style with Romanesque characteristics, given that the church was to be built in Rome.

Today, St. Paul’s within the Walls Church still embraces multiculturalism. Not only does it have a multi-ethnic congregation, but it also hosts the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center.

Cultural activities

A great surprise for those who have in mind catholic churches is that St. Paul’s within the Walls hosts secular music concerts and shows. This curious fact can easily be explained: the Anglican Church, to whom St. Paul’s within the Walls pertains, declares that there are no such things as sacred or profane places, because God is everywhere. Thus, there is no distinction between sacred and non-sacred space, consequently sacred and non-sacred music can be combined. Indeed, St. Paul’s within the Walls Church hosts opera concerts all year round. ITALIANO
